The Faroe Islands are an archipelago of 18 islands located in Northeast Atlantic Ocean, half way between Scotland and Iceland.

What is the best way to get to the Faroe Islands?

The Faroe Islands can be reached by plane or ship. By air: the most frequent flights are from Copenhagen (2h) with the national airline Atlantic Airways (www.atlantic.fo) and with SAS (www.flysas.com). By ship: departure from Hirtshals, Denmark, with ship connections to Tórshavn (36h) with the ship Norröna (www.smyrilline.fo), which then continues on to Iceland. It is possible to take on board motorbikes, cars and campers.

How many days in Faroe Islands?

A minimum of five full days, but at least 10 would be preferable in order to have time to do some hiking and to be able to compensate for the days of bad weather, which are never lacking, even in summer.

What is the best time of year to visit the Faroe Islands?

The best time to visit the Faroe Islands is from the end of May to the beginning of September, when weather conditions are better (but still unstable) and puffins can be seen. The other months are recommended for those who are not afraid of potentially extreme weather conditions. Winter is suitable for those who want to enjoy more fascinating atmospheres thanks to the low sun that makes the landscapes even more spectacular and thanks to the few hours of daylight, with a lot of luck, one might see the northern lights.

What to pack for a travel in Faroe Islands?

In summer in the Faroe Islands, it is necessary to bring: a windproof and waterproof jacket; windproof and waterproof overpants; high shoes or non-slip and waterproof hiking boots; cotton hat; long shirt and T-shirt for sunny and windless days; warm jumper or sweatshirt for cool and windy days. --- In winter in the Faroe Islands it is necessary to bring: padded, windproof and waterproof jacket; windproof and waterproof overpants; high shoes or non-slip and waterproof hiking boots; gloves; wool hat; warm jumper.

Can I travel around the Faroe Islands without a car?

The Faroese archipelago is connected by submarine tunnels (for a fee), ferries and helicopters. If you only have 3-5 days at your disposal, a rented car or a local guide is recommended in order to optimise time and see as much as possible. The public bus service, in fact, does not always offer frequent connections and even some places such as Saksun are not served.

When can I see the northern lights in Faroe Islands?

The northern lights can be seen on the Faroe Islands from late August to late April. Outside this time frame, the night sky is not dark enough. Solar storms with a power of 4 Kp or more are necessary to be able to see the aurora without difficulty.

What is the weather like in the Faroe Islands?

The Faroe Islands are characterised by an extremely dynamic subarctic maritime climate, i.e. influenced by the ocean, which makes the temperatures rather mild despite their proximity to the Arctic Circle. In fact, average temperatures in summer are 13 °C and 3 °C in winter. Winds and rain are almost never lacking during the year and become extreme in the period between October and April when storms and hurricanes can sometimes make outdoor activities impossible. As the climate is highly dynamic, between autumn and spring there can be moments of sun, rain and snow on the same day. Even in summer, one can go from good weather to rain, wind and cold in a flash. A bit like in the mountains, so you have to be prepared for anything.

What language is spoken in the Faroe Islands?

Faroese and Danish are the official languages. English is widely spoken.

Is it safe to travel to the Faroe Islands?

Anyone can feel safe on the Faroe Islands. Children, girls, women and the elderly do not run any risks at any time. Possibly the most unpleasant thing that can happen is to meet some drunk people, especially on weekends in the capital, who will want to chat about anything and maybe have a few laughs.

What food is popular in Faroe Islands?

The traditional Faroese cuisine is rather simple and is based on meat (especially lamb, also fermented), fresh and dried fish, cetaceans, seafood, dairy products, eggs and vegetables (potatoes, rhubarb, turnips and the like). In recent years, thanks to tourism, cafés and restaurants have significantly improved the offer of their menus by offering often very special and very high quality dishes with attention also paid to vegetarians, vegans and the intolerant.
