The celebration of the new year in the small village of Vágur (island of Suðuroy, Faroe Islands) attracts the attention of many tourists worldwide.
A procession of locals carrying torches and flags marches from the centre of the town to a square where an old wrecked boat decorated with Viking ornaments is placed for the event.
Here, people sing the song “Tíðin rennur sum streymur í á“, which means “Time flows away like the water in a river”. When the song ends, they throw their torches on the boat and set it on fire.
After that people celebrate all night dancing and singing.
