The spectacular new year’s eve in Vagur

The celebration of the new year in the small village of Vágur (island of Suðuroy, Faroe Islands) attracts the attention of many tourists worldwide.

A procession of locals carrying torches and flags from the centre of the town to a square where there is an old wrecked boat decorated with Viking ornaments for the event.
Here, people sing the song “Tíðin rennur sum streymur í á“, which means “Time flows away like the water in a river”. When the song ends, they throw their torches on the boat and set it on fire.

After that people celebrate all night dancing and singing.
