The celebration of the new year in the small village of Vágur (island of Suðuroy, Faroe Islands) attracts the attention of many tourists around the world. A procession of locals carrying torches and flags from the centre of the town to a square where there is an old wrecked boat that is decorated with Viking ornaments for the event. Here people sing the song “Tíðin rennur sum streymur í á” which means “Time flows away like the water in a river”. When the song ends they all throw their torches on the boat and set it on fire. After that people celebrate all night dancing and singing.
